A school transitions programme that supports young people into work.
Stepping Up is an innovative school transitions programme that supports young people who have a learning disability, autism or additional support needs. It lets them build and explore their aspirations for the future, achieve an accredited qualification and a positive destination on leaving school.
The only programme of its kind in Europe, Stepping Up takes participants through a process of discovery and planning for their future. It begins with an initial investigation of the world of work and leads to engagement with employers in real workplace settings.
This programme provides support for young people to transition successfully from school, as well as tailored aftercare to ensure that destinations are sustained. Stepping Up supports outcomes and achievements through the Curriculum for Excellence, exceeds Education Scotland’s Work Placement Standards and meets the 7 steps to good transition.
Stepping Up is more than an education and employment programme. It enables young people to demonstrate the behaviours and attitudes expected by an employer through embedded learning and ongoing support. Stepping Up works in partnership with schools, increasing expectations for those who engage in the programme. Importantly, it allows participants to compete for jobs by gaining skills that employer’s value.
Since 2009, Stepping Up has delivered a 98% positive destination rate, significantly higher than the current destination rate for school leavers with additional support needs. 30% of Stepping Up graduates go into work on leaving school.
The Stepping Works programme is supported by Glasgow City Council
